Ways to jump-start your motivation

If getting started is the toughest step for you, try these tips to get going:
• Sign up for an organized walking or swimming event. You'll have a goal to work toward and the fact that you paid an entry fee should help motivate you.
• Sign up for an exercise class or group activity. You'll make friends and feel compelled to go when you know people are counting on you to show up.
• Get an exercise buddy. Do you have a friend you wish you could spend more time with? Invite her to join you on regular walks and you can schmooze while you stroll. Want more couple time? Try the same thing with your honey.
• Walk your dog or offer to walk a friend's dog. The SPCA is always looking for dog walkers, too!

• Walk to as many errands as you can. Having a destination helps keep you going.
• Bring exercise gear with you to work or keep a pair of walking shoes in the car so you'll always be ready.
• Write down your goals (it's fine to start small so they won't seem too overwhelming) and then keep track of your progress in an exercise log.
